Tsum Valley: The Hidden Side of Manaslu

The Tsum Valley is one of the most special parts of the Manaslu Region. It remained closed to foreign trekkers until 2008 and is known for its strong Buddhist heritage, peaceful villages, and spiritual atmosphere.

Why Tsum Valley Is Special

It is quieter and more culturally isolated than the main Manaslu Circuit.
The valley is traditionally regarded as a non-violence area, where killing animals is prohibited.
Key destinations include Lokpa, Chumling, Chekampar, Nile, Chule, and Mu Gumba
Trekkers can see views of Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, and the Tibetan plateau.
It can be done as a separate trek or combined with the Manaslu Circuit for a longer journey.

Manaslu Conservation Area

The Manaslu Conservation Area is not just a trekking destination; it is a living landscape where local communities, wildlife, forests, farms, and mountains coexist. It was established in 1998 and is managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation through the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP).

Nature and Wildlife

The region’s wide altitude range creates many different ecosystems, from warm river valleys to glaciers and snowy peaks.

Mammals: Snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, and Himalayan wolf.
Birds: More than 110 bird species are recorded in the area, including the Himalayan monal, Nepal’s national bird.
Plants: The conservation area supports an estimated 1,500–2,000 flowering plant species.
Landscapes: Subtropical forests, waterfalls, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, lakes, and snow-covered peaks.

Permits for Manaslu Region Trekking

Trekking in the Manaslu Region requires special permits because parts of the area are officially designated as restricted zones. Permits must normally be arranged through a registered Nepali trekking agency, and trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide.

Required Permits

Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Required for the restricted Manaslu area.
Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): Required to enter the conservation area.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required because the Manaslu Circuit exits through Dharapani in the Annapurna region.
Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit: Required if you add the Tsum Valley to your itinerary.
Local municipality fee: Usually collected at the Jagat checkpoint.

Permit Costs

According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the Gorkha Manaslu Area restricted permit costs:

September–November: USD 100 per person for the first week, then USD 15 per person per extra day.
December–August: USD 75 per person for the first week, then USD 10 per person per extra day.

For the Tsum Valley, the restricted permit costs:

September–November: USD 40 per person for the first week, then USD 7 per day.
December–August: USD 30 per person for the first week, then USD 7 per day.

The MCAP entry permit costs NPR 3,000 for foreign visitors and NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals.

Best Time to Visit the Manaslu Region

The best time to visit the Manaslu Region is during spring and autumn, when the weather is more stable, skies are clearer, and trails are generally safer.

Spring: March to May

Spring is one of the best seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The weather is mild, rhododendron forests bloom, and mountain views are often excellent.

Clear mornings and colorful landscapes
Blooming rhododendron forests
Comfortable temperatures at lower elevations
Possible snow near Larkya La in early spring
Great season for photography and nature lovers.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is widely considered the best overall season for trekking in the Manaslu Region. After the monsoon, the air becomes clearer, trails dry out, and views of Mount Manaslu and surrounding peaks are outstanding.

Stable weather and clear mountain views
Dry and safer trekking trails
Best conditions for crossing Larkya La Pass
Peak trekking season, so teahouses can be busier
October is especially popular for reliable weather.

Monsoon: June to August

The monsoon brings lush green landscapes, waterfalls, and fewer trekkers, but it also brings heavy rain, slippery trails, leeches, clouds, and landslide risks. It is generally better suited to experienced trekkers.

Winter: December to February

Winter offers quiet trails and clear skies, but temperatures can drop severely at high altitude. Snow can block or make the Larkya La Pass dangerous, so winter trekking requires strong preparation and experience.

Culture and Local Life

The Manaslu Region is home to communities with deep Tibetan Buddhist roots, including the Nubri, Tsumba, and Gurung people. Villages such as Lho, Samagaun, Samdo, Prok, and Chekampar preserve traditional architecture, prayer flags, mani walls, gompas, and Buddhist festivals.

Cultural Experiences

Visit ancient monasteries and gompas
Walk around mani walls and chortens in a clockwise direction
See traditional stone houses and barley fields
Experience local hospitality in family-run teahouses
Learn about Tibetan Buddhist rituals and mountain life
Respect local customs, especially when photographing people or entering religious sites.

How to Reach the Manaslu Region

Most trekkers begin their journey in Kathmandu, then travel by road to Machha Khola or Soti Khola, the common starting points for the Manaslu Circuit. The drive usually takes around 7–10 hours, depending on road and traffic conditions.

Typical Access Route

Fly into Kathmandu, Nepal.
Drive from Kathmandu to Arughat or directly toward Machha Khola.
Start trekking along the Budhi Gandaki River.
Follow the route through Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, Samagaun, Samdo, and Larkya La.
Finish at Dharapani or Besisahar, then return to Kathmandu or Pokhara by road.bikatadventures+2

Difficulty and Fitness Requirements

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderate to challenging Himalayan trek. It does not require technical climbing skills, but it demands stamina, proper acclimatization, and mental preparation.

Why It Is Challenging

Long walking days, often 6–8 hours or more
High altitude, especially near Larkya La Pass
Steep ascents and descents
Remote locations with limited medical access
Weather can change quickly in the mountains
The pass-crossing day is long and physically demanding.

How to Prepare

Begin cardio training at least one month before the trek
Practice hiking with a daypack
Include uphill walking, stairs, cycling, swimming, or jogging
Choose a longer itinerary with proper acclimatization days
Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol at altitude
Learn the symptoms of altitude sickness and descend if symptoms worsen.

What to Pack for Manaslu Trekking

Packing properly is essential because the Manaslu trail passes through different climate zones, from warm valleys to freezing high-altitude areas.

Essential Packing List

Trekking boots with good ankle support
Trekking poles for steep and rocky sections
Layered clothing: base layers, fleece, insulated jacket, and waterproof shell
Warm sleeping bag, ideally rated for cold high-altitude conditions
Rain jacket and rain cover
Sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
Headlamp with extra batteries
First-aid kit and personal medicines
