Overview

The Sanctuary Annapurna Base Camp Trek Trip Overview:

There is a place in the Himalayas where the mountains form a perfect circle — a natural amphitheater of ice and stone so complete that it feels designed.

This is the Annapurna Sanctuary. At its center, Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 meters, surrounded on all sides by some of the highest peaks on Earth: Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m), and the sacred Machhapuchhre (6,993 m)—the "Fish Tail" mountain, so revered by the Gurung people that no one has ever been permitted to summit it.

The journey to the Sanctuary is as extraordinary as the destination itself. You begin in the subtropical valleys of Pokhara, where the air is warm and the rice paddies shimmer green. The trail climbs through dense rhododendron forests—in spring, they explode in shades of crimson, pink, and white—and passes through traditional Gurung villages where stone houses with slate roofs cling to hillsides like barnacles.

At Ghorepani, you will rise before dawn to climb Poon Hill (3,210m), where the sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges is considered one of the finest mountain panoramas on Earth. Then, descending into the Modi Khola valley, you enter the sanctuary itself, a narrowing gorge of bamboo and oak that opens suddenly into the glacial basin of Annapurna Base Camp.

Standing there, surrounded by a 360-degree wall of Himalayan giants, you will understand why the Gurung people consider this place sacred. The silence is absolute. The scale is incomprehensible. And the feeling of being small beneath something infinitely large is transformative.

This is the Sanctuary. This is where the mountains embrace you.
